ЛОБОВОЙ УДАР :: The premiere of the new SL was a particularly proud occasion for the safety engineers since even in frontal impacts with very small overlap, here only 25 %, excellent results were achieved.
ТЕСТ НА ПЕРЕВОРОТ :: Also in regard to roll-over safety all Mercedes passenger cars (that includes the ML, just added that for our ML fans) continue to be developped and tested without compromises, until they meet the high requirements of their safety design specifications.
With closed vehicles this is usually accomplished by a high-strength roof structure from A-, B-, C- and in some cases D-pillars (e.g. M-Class and wagons) as well as roof frames, which are designed into a cohesive force flow and thus secure the survival space in case of a roll-over.
With open vehicles this is more difficult, because the roof structure is missing due to the concept. Therefore the security of the survival space is safe-guarded by extremely rigid front wall pillars and roll-over bars.
The construction of the roll-over bar can vary from vehicle to vehicle, the goal, however, is always the same: maximum occupant protection. As world premiere the SL-roadster introduces a rotating, automatically deployable roll-over bar, which provides reliable protection in a roll-over.
The methods applied in roll-over tests vary considerably and are adjusted to requirements in each case. In addition to the lateral roll-over, the "corkscrew" test is now used again after 25 years under certain conditions. In this test the car is rotated around its longitudinal axis and additionally forced into a translational motion. Today, the aim is not only to gain information about the structural behavior but also to obtain parameters for the design of roll-over sensors.
In the test with the ramp shown above, the SL test car proved to be extremely steadfast and staunchly refused to overturn.
It was only in the third attempt and after increases in test speed and "corkscrew" ramp height that the test engineers succeeded in causing the car to roll over.

ТЕСТ НА ПЕРЕВОРОТ :: With the new automatic roll-over bar and extremely rigid A-pillars, the SL offers a higher level of protection even in a roll-over.

ТЕСТ НА ПЕРЕВОРОТ :: "Roll-over tests have always been one of the more spectacular elements of the crash testing program. Here we see a 220SE undergoing a roll-over test on a corkscrew ramp (approach speed 80 km/h)." Which year?

Subject: [MB] Corkscrew test 1959?

Answer 1959!!

According to MB literature. 1959, first
"laboratory" impact and rollover tests.
This year Mercedes makes scrap out of
80 test cars in order to get on the
right track.

1962, a steam rocket replaced the
cable winch previously used in testing
on a 220SE....
