    The Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer were re-engineered for the 2006 model year. Frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Ford as part of frontal crash test verification.
    The frontal offset crash test ratings also apply to the Explorer Sport Trac, which was redesigned for the 2007 model year (no 2006 model Sport Trac was available). The Sport Trac is very similar to the Explorer, except that it has a longer wheelbase and an open cargo bed behind the occupant compartment in place of the Explorer's enclosed cargo area with optional third row seat.

Restraints/dummy kinematics

    Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail and B-pillar.

Injury measures

    Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head accelerations from the roof rail and B-pillar hits were low.

    Rear passenger - Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Head protection

    Driver - The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof and a side airbag that deployed from the seat.
    Rear passenger - The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.

    The Ford Explorer 4-door (except the Sport Trac model) and the Mercury Mountaineer were redesigned for the 2002 model year. Explorers and Mountaineers manufactured after October 2001 include structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal offset crashes (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).
    The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of a 2002 Explorer with the structural changes in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.
    The Explorer and Mountaineer have been re-engineered for the 2006 model year, and the Aviator has been dropped.

    The Ford Explorer was redesigned for the 1995 model year and the Mercury Mountaineer was introduced in 1997.

Restraints/dummy kinematics

    Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. During the crash, the driver door opened. This opening significantly affected dummy movement during the test and shouldn't happen because, in some crashes, it could allow partial or complete occupant ejection. After the dummy moved suddenly toward the door, its head went outside the occupant compartment. Its neck tilted back excessively when the shoulder belt tightened across the base of the dummy's neck. As the dummy came back into the occupant compartment, its head hit the B-pillar.

    Measures taken from the head, chest, and legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low.
