    The Chevrolet Malibu was redesigned for the 2008 model year. Frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by General Motors as part of frontal crash test verification.

Restraints/dummy kinematics

    Dummy movement was well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, it rebounded into the seat without its head coming close to any stiff structure that could cause injury.

Injury measures

    Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible.

    Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy moved back into the seat without its head coming close to any stiff structure that could cause injury.

Injury measures

    Measures taken from the neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible. Forces on the right foot were high, indicating that injuries to the foot would be possible.

    Two previous tests of a 2004 Malibu were conducted, one with an optional side curtain airbag for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. Beginning with 2005 models, side airbags designed to protect drivers' and front passengers' torsos were added to the optional side curtain airbags previously available.
    The three tested vehicles are rated separately, except that structural ratings for the vehicles are based on the two previous tests plus the latest test. Also, the rear passenger injury and head protection ratings are based on the two tests with side airbags.

Injury measures

    Driver - Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
    Rear passenger - Measures taken from the dummies in tests of both the 2005 and 2004 models with side airbags indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Head protection

    Driver - The dummy’s head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof and a side airbag that deployed from the seat.
    Rear passenger - In each of the two tests with side airbags, the dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof (test of 2005 model shown).

(Chevrolet reported that these door trim panel changes would not significantly affect side-impact performance in models without side airbags; therefore the overall side impact rating for all 2004 and later models without side airbags is the same.)
    Two tests of a 2004 Malibu were conducted, one with an optional side airbag for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. A third test of a Malibu, a 2005 model, was conducted because the side airbags were changed beginning with 2005 models. These three Malibus are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for the three vehicles are based on all three tests.

Injury measures

    Driver - Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious skull fracture and/or brain injuries plus rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries would be likely in a crash of this severity. A fracture of the pelvis also would be possible.
    Rear passenger - Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious head injuries would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.

Head protection

    Driver - The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing high head injury measures.
    Rear passenger - The dummy's head was hit by the window sill and window frame of the rear passenger door, producing moderately high head injury measures. Hitting the window areas should be prevented.

A further change was made beginning with 2005 models - side airbags designed to protect drivers' and front passengers' torsos were added to the optional side curtain airbags available in 2004.
    Two tests of a 2004 Malibu were conducted, one with an optional side curtain airbag for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. A third test of a Malibu, a 2005 model, was conducted because of the side airbag change. These three Malibus are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for the three vehicles are based on all three tests, and the rear passenger injury and head protection ratings are based on the two tests with side airbags.
